Cusco Announces No-stopping Strike due to Chinchero Airport

After a general assembly, the authorities and the citizens of Cusco declared today an indefinite strike due to the suspension of the construction of the new international airport of Chinchero, which were to begin this Tuesday 31 of January in Chinchero.

Nearly three thousand people from the provinces of Urubamba, Paucartambo, Anta and the Convention protested this morning in the surroudings of Chinchero.

The people gave a deadline of three days for President Pedro Pablo Kucyznski to travel to Cusco and solve the problem. In addition, they announced that they plan to block the main roads that connect the city of Cusco with the provinces of the region.

Chinchero's new international airport has been a major project for the last years. It will help a lot to decentralize international flights from Lima. However it will also mean less tourists visiting Lima as many travelers just arrive to Lima to take their flight in or out of the country.

At the moment of writing this post there are no blockages on the road from Cusco to Chinchero, however this has been a threat so we recommend travelers to ask their tour operators for more information.
